Short Ghost Story Ernest Gets Happy Death Day Writer-Director

Back in October, author Geoff Manaugh published a short ghost story on Vice about an entity named Ernest and his adventures from social media star, to guest on the Jimmy Kimmel show, and beyond.

Well, the short story gathered quite a bit of attention since its posting. So much so that there was recently a bidding war between six studios for the rights to the feature. These studios included Amblin, Studio 8, Sony and Fox 2000, and Legendary.

Turns out as of yesterday, Legendary won the rights and has set Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon to write and direct the film adaptation, with Dan Halsted and Nate Miller producing.

Upon reading the Deadline article, I gave the short story a read. And at a brisk 4,000 some odd words, the story reads like a film treatment. So I guess it makes sense the film rights were highly sought after.

That said, the short in its own right is a compelling read. A very interesting new take on the classic haunting/ghost story. Could make for one hell of a road trip family film. Not too sure about a straight horror movie though. But we’ll see!
