Arnold Schwarzenegger Discusses How the New Terminator Film Will Deal With The Franchise’s Confusing Timeline

The biggest issue that the Terminator films had was that they used a very specific date for “Judgment Day”, a date that passed over 20 years ago. The third film tried to fix this issue by moving the date, saying that it was, and I quote, “postponed”. However, the 5th film (Salvation was pretty cut and clear) started playing with the timeline in ways that got too confusing and too muddled for anyone to understand what was going on. Plus, it sucked.

In a new interview with Business Insider, star Arnold Schwarzenegger, who will be returning to the series yet again, stated that the film will return to the basics, in more ways than one.

I think [James] Cameron and Tim [Miller] came up with a concept where they can continue on with the T-800 but make a whole new movie, What they are doing now with this one is basically to just take a few very basic characters, like Linda Hamilton’s character and my character, and dismiss everything else. Just move away from all these rules of the timeline and other characters,” he explains.

He then adds, “[The T-800 is] a machine, can be destructive, can do things human beings can’t do, but at the same time when newer technology comes along the character suddenly is vulnerable and that makes him even more interesting.

Not only is Schwarzenegger back but Linda Hamilton is confirmed to return as Sarah Connor. The film has a release date of July 26th, 2019.
