Remembering George A. Romero by Kyra Schon

It has been a little more than a week since George passed away, and it is just now beginning to sink in that I – that none of us – will see him again.

George left a huge – and hugely important – body of work behind. His contribution to film and popular culture is unparalleled. He created a new genre of horror, and inspired many other artists to forge their own paths. He proved that creativity and passion can lead to immortality. The light of his genius will shine forever.

I can’t imagine what my life would be like now if George hadn’t cast me, at age 9, as Karen Cooper in Night of the Living Dead. Some of my dearest friends are people I’ve met as a result of that film. Convention appearances and letters and e-mail correspondence have led me to a community of like-minded people without whom my life would be far less colorful. I have George to thank for putting those people in my life.

I know how many people – friends and fans – have felt personally affected by George’s passing, and I want to extend my deepest sympathies to them all, but particularly to his children. Cameron, Andrew, and Tina, my heart goes out to each of you and I hope you will all find peace and comfort in the best memories of your dad.
