For many of us, the highlight of this year’s TV renewal season was the news that “The Exorcist” would be back for a second season… and quite a different season it’s shaping up to be!

We were front and center at “The Exorcist’s” San Diego Comic-Con panel on Thursday evening, and while they didn’t drop too many spoilers, we do have a few updates from “the three priests,” as Alfonso Herrera, Ben Daniels, and Kurt Egyiawan were affectionately called during the audience Q&A; new cast members Brianna Hildebrand (who won us over right away by saying what a big horror fan she is) and John Cho; new showrunner/exec producer Sean Crouch; and creator/exec producer Jeremy Slater.

Things kicked off with a recap video of Season 1 that just left us that much hungrier for Season 2. You can see the panel in its entirety below (minus a hilarious blooper reel that we are praying is included in the home video package for the first season), but things of note include:

  • We are indeed leaving Chicago behind us as Father Tomas (Herrera) and his defrocked sidekick Marcus (Daniels) hit the road and go rural. The decision was made to expand the world of “The Exorcist” to include “kids in danger and weird shit in the woods.” We’ll be seeing in Season 2 a good bit of “nature horror.”
  • “At least one member of the Rance family” from Season 1 could be making a reappearance, but don’t expect it to be something as cliche as Alan Ruck (Papa Rance) becoming possessed himself. It has to be organic to the story.
  • Marcus has an interesting path ahead, including a very physical fight in which he appears to be outnumbered in the first episode and, down the road, a possible romance.
  • While Slater’s prior series “Supernatural” includes angels, he assured us that “The Exorcist” will stay more grounded, although God of course remains a primary figure throughout the new season.
  • Basically what Slater wanted to do was include a “cabin in the woods” type scenario with a creepy forest and haunted islands.

We are totally on board with everything said during the panel and can’t wait for September 29th to get here already. Stay tuned for more updates as they come!
