We recently had the opportunity of snagging a few minutes with director Mathieu Ratthe, whose latest film, The Gracefield Incident is being released on 7/21. He was gracious enough to give us an inside delve into how this film came to be, as well as what he’s got coming up on the horizon – read on and enjoy.

DC: Can you tell us a bit about the film’s premise, as well as a description of your character, Matthew?

MR: With the The Gracefield Incident, I wanted to create a suspenseful story that scared the crap out of the audience but also that makes them get emotionally involved, which is tough to do in this kind of genre, but I think we achieved pretty well in our film. Our movie is about 6 friends, 3 couples, that goes into a cabin for a getaway weekend, but after a few hours of been there, a meteorite comes crashing the party. They decided to go investigate to see what felt off the sky. My character, Matthew Donovan, is the one that the audience will follow step by step through the entire story as a camera is integrated inside his prosthetic eye. This subjective POV will allow the audience not only to follow on main character but also to live as if they were the main character in some sequences. They will live this adventure in the first seat of the roller coaster. My character will have to face his own demons, but also conquer his own fears. This whole story will help him heal his past.

DC: How did you manage to come up with the story behind the film?

MR: The initial idea happened when I saw, back in my hometown, Saguenay, a meteorite falling off the sky. My friend and I tried to find it but we never did. And I always wondered what would’ve found. The conceptual idea (or I liked to call it the “technique”) came after I realized how many days (13 days) I was given to shoot our film with the budget that I had. I didn’t want to be a typical “found footage technique” movie, so this is how I came up with the cellphone camera integrated into a prosthetic eye. I thought it would be interesting for the audience to follow a subjective POV and to be able to live this suspenseful story in the eye of the main character.

DC: You’ve performed a variety of roles when it comes to your films: acting, writing, producing and directing – which one of these is your biggest passion?

MR: I have a passion for film making. I love absolutely everything about it, but I would say that directing is the one that I love the most.

DC: Lastly, after the release of this film, what can your fans expect to see from you down the road?

MR: I’m attracted by good stories and I have a few that I’m developing that are in other genre but I’m definitely not done with the suspense/horror genre. I won’t reveal anything specific on my next project at the moment, as I like to keep the suspense, but I would suggest to check out my Facebook page www.facebook.com/MathieuRatthe and more news will come soon.
