Lucky McKee’s The Woman has had absolutely no lack of controversy and press after its screening at Sundance this year. The movie, based on the novel by Jack Ketchum, caught massive attention after the very vocal walkout of one festival-goer at Sundance. (Dig it here)
It should come as no surprise that something from the mind of Jack Ketchum would be capable of controversy, but this is shaping up to be the showstopper. Now, visitors to the upcoming Texas Frightmare Weekend will get the chance to see a special screening of The Woman on Thursday, April 28, at 9:30 PM. The presentation will include red carpet entrances by McGee as well as the film’s stars Pollyanna McIntosh, Sean Bridgers and Shyla Molhusen.
The screening of The Woman will be preceded by Andrew van der Houten’s Offspring at 7:00 PM. The tale of a family of primitive cannibals that wreck havoc on a suburban community, The Offspring was the prequel for The Woman. Van der Houten will attend and participate in a post-screening Q&A.
Texas Frightmare Film Festival Director Loyd Cryer said, “It is really exciting for us to present the Texas premiere of The Woman at Texas Frightmare Weekend. We have long been fans of Lucky McKee’s films, and since Shyla was discovered here, we could not be more proud of our association with what we think is his most audacious and affecting work yet. And following films like May, Red and his Masters of Horror classic ‘Sick Girl’, that is saying something.”
You aren’t going to get many opportunities to check out The Woman in a theater, much less in a double bill with its prequel, The Offspring. So if you are able to attend, we’d recommend checking them out.
Have you seen The Woman yet? Is it worth all the buzz and controversy? Talk about it in the comments down below.
Synopsis
The Woman is the last surviving member of a feral clan that has roamed the Northeast Coast for decades. When the last of her family is killed in a battle with the police, The Woman finds herself alone, severely wounded and vulnerable. Unfortunately, she is now a far too easy prey for local hunter, successful country lawyer and seriously disturbed family man Christopher Cleek. With his twisted set of ideals, Cleek decides to embark upon a deranged project – to capture her and “break” The Woman – a decision that will soon threaten the lives of Cleek, his family and The Woman.
The Texas Frightmare Film Festival and Texas Frightmare Weekend will run April 29 – May 1, 2011. Passes and tickets are currently on sale online at Texas Frightmare website.
