Blumhouse to Produce a Film About Black Lesbians in Rural America

It’s been revealed that Blumhouse will be producing an as-yet-untitled horror film that will be written and directed by Dee Rees, whose film Mudbound was a massive hit at Sundance and was picked up by Netflix for an incredible $12.5 million. Per TB, Rees and Blumhouse head Jason Blum met in Bel Air and hatched the idea together over a night of chatting all things horror.

Per the site, the film will focus on a black lesbian couple who move into a house in rural America only to encounter a supernatural element that doesn’t want them there. Furthermore, the couple will be at odds with their neighbors. Rees says that this film is inspired by her own experiences of moving with her wife into a small town.

Obviously this is the very beginning of the project, so we’ve got a ways to go. However, after the smash success of Blumhouse’s Get Out, I’m not surprised they want to bring forth another socially charged horror film. It’s obviously a very hot topic these days and horror has long been known to be a reflection of what society goes through at a given time period.
