Dredd and Ex Machina Getting 4K Blu-ray Editions

If you’re into incredible sci-fi films that each have their own unique horror twist, get excited because Lionsgate has announced that they are bringing both Dredd and Ex Machina to their new Ultra HD 4K home video format. Right now, these are US only releases, so my apologies on behalf of Lionsgate to the rest of the world. However, that’s not going to dim my enjoyment of these titles in any way. Sorry not sorry.

Ex Machina was considered an independent critical success, being nominated for (and winning) dozens of prestigious awards. It was the directorial debut of Alex Garland, who wrote 28 Days Later, Sunshine, and Dredd, and starred Domhnnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander.

Dredd was directed by Pete Travis and executively produced by Adi Shankar. While the film didn’t perform well in theaters (it supposedly just broke even with its budget), it found great success on home video, becoming a cult title for which fans are still desperately clamoring for a sequel (myself included). The film starred Karl Urban, Olivia Thirlby, and Lena Heady.

Dredd will be available for pre-order soon via Amazon, the same with Ex Machina. Both have a release date of June 6th.

Cheers to Den of Geek for the heads up!

Ex Machina Synopsis:
Caleb Smith, a programmer at a huge Internet company, wins a contest that enables him to spend a week at the private estate of Nathan Bateman, his firm’s brilliant CEO. When he arrives, Caleb learns that he has been chosen to be the human component in a Turing test to determine the capabilities and consciousness of Ava, a beautiful robot. However, it soon becomes evident that Ava is far more self-aware and deceptive than either man imagined.

Dredd Synopsis:
Mega City One is a vast, violent metropolis where felons rule the streets. The only law lies with cops called “judges,” who act as judge, jury and executioner, and Dredd is one of the city’s most feared. One day, Dredd is partnered with Cassandra, a rookie with powerful psychic abilities. A report of a terrible crime sends Dredd and Cassandra to a dangerous area controlled by Ma-Ma, a drug lord who will stop at nothing to protect her empire.
