While The King’s Speech leads the pack with twelve Oscar nominations, Black Swan did the horror genre proud by landing five prestigious nominations earlier today. And the much maligned The Wolfman made a surprise appearance as well with a nod in the Makeup category for Rick Baker and Dave Elsey.

Black Swan Lands Five Oscar Nominations; The Wolfman Nabs a Nod for MakeupHere’s the rundown of Black Swan‘s nominations:

Best Picture
Best Actress – Natalie Portman
Cinematography – Matthew Libatique
Directing – Darren Aronofsky
Film Editing – Andrew Weisblum

127 Hours, which we’ve mentioned sporadically due to its survival theme, scored six nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor (Oscars telecast co-host James Franco), Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), and Writing (Adapted Screenplay).

Alice in Wonderland, another film we’ve covered occasionally, garnered recognition in the categories of Art Direction, Costume Design, and Visual Effects, where it’s joined by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Hereafter, Inception, and Iron Man 2.

The biggest snubs are without a doubt the absence of Christopher Nolan (Inception) in the Directing category and no mention of Black Swan for Writing or Ryan Gosling (Blue Valentine) for Best Actor. In any event, you can bet we’ll be watching ABC on Sunday, February 27th, to see who takes home the gold. Good luck to all the nominees!
