Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’s Weekend Haul in China More Than Entire Domestic Earnings

If you head over to Box Office Mojo and check out the various weekend grosses of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (review) since its January 27th release, you can’t help but be a bit surprised by the discrepancy between its measly domestic result (a scant $26.65 million) and its international haul (a whopping $212 million) so far.
Fortunately, we have the scoop from THR as to what’s going on: The film opened to an enormous $33 million on its first day in China, and Beijing-based Leomus Films, the local marketing partner on the release, has upped its full-weekend forecast to just shy of $85 million.
For some perspective, the film’s Friday haul, which included some limited previews, gives The Final Chapter claim to the third-largest Hollywood debut ever in China, following only Universal’s Furious 7 with $68 million (2015) and Legendary’s Warcraft at $46 million (2016).
Does that mean we haven’t really seen The Final Chapter and more installments (or a reboot) could be heading our way? Time will tell, but you can rest assured we’ll bring you the news if and when it comes!

Synopsis:
Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, humanity is on its last legs after Alice is betrayed by Wesker in Washington, D.C. As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
In a race against time, Alice will join forces with old friends and an unlikely ally in an action-packed battle with undead hordes and new mutant monsters. Between losing her superhuman abilities and Umbrella’s impending attack, this will be Alice’s most difficult adventure as she fights to save humanity, which is on the brink of oblivion.
