Apocalypse Now Becoming a Survival Horror Game

Not really sure how Dread-worthy this one will ultimately be, but the Kickstarter campaign for the newly announced Apocalypse Now game adaptation refers to it as as everything from “survival horror” to a “psychedelic horror RPG”, so it’s worth a mention. They even say in the video below that they chose to fund it via Kickstarter instead of approaching a major publisher to finance it so that they could make a slow burning horror game instead of a more commercially friendly action shooter. I’ve listed a quote from the campaign video below that I think sums up their intentions:

“We are not making a shooter. We are making a survival horror experience.”

Unlike the 2006 Godfather game, which Francis Ford Coppola openly despised, this time the legendary director is actively involved and enthusiastic about the project, referring it it as “Apocalypse Now for a new platform for a new generation” in a video message which you can see in its entirety on the campaign page. He also supports the decision to independently finance the game rather than allowing a big publisher to exploit the iconic brand name.

And man, is there some talent onboard. Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity director Josh Sawyer, Dungeons & Dragons and The Witcher series producer Lawrence Liberty, and Battlefield and Gears of War writer Rob Auten are all working on Apocalypse Now, which needs $900,000 to become a reality.

If you’re thinking that the whole things sounds too strange to be a reality, you might be surprised to know that we’ve actually had something similar in the past. Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkness, on which Apocalypse Now was based, was also adapted into 2012’s Spec Ops: The Line. Which was also frequently referred to by its developers as being a horror game because of how it depicted the madness and brutalities of war.

Anyway, the Kickstarter lasts until February 24 and they’ve still got a hell of a lot more to raise, so don’t wait too long to contribute.
