Boss battles in games are becoming something of a dying art, as most modern developers seem to think that their day has come and gone. So kudos to Team Ninja for including some huge uglies that you’ll be facing in their dark fantasy RPG Nioh. If you have the stomach for it, you can check out the Orgress boss battle in the video below.
Unlike most RPGs, Nioh will not feature an open world, although it still still have mostly nonlinear environments. This was because it was felt that the frequent loading times necessary for an open world would have been a hindrance for a game in which the player will die so frequently. But even without a sandbox area, the Dark Souls influences are abundantly clear in how Nioh aims to challenge the player as much as possible by putting them up against the most unforgiving powerful enemies, whilst at the same time rewarding them for coming up with creative ways to reach objectives.
Originally set to be published by Koei Tecmo, Sony will now be handling Nioh’s publishing duties in most territories, as they clearly saw it as being the start of a viable first party franchise. And although it falls into the lower end of the AAA spectrum, Sony are likely to market the absolute hell out of Nioh before its release like they’re currently doing with Horizon Zero Dawn. So it’s probably gonna be a hit when it arrives on February 7, 2017. I guess a sequel is all but inevitable.
