Celluloid Nightmares Nabs Atrocious
With the Paranormal Activity franchise clocking major profits, you can expect cinéma-vérité style flicks to keep coming hot and heavy. The latest one to come to our attention is Atrocious, which the good folks over at Celluloid Nightmares just snapped up.
From the Press Release:
Celluloid Nightmares has acquired worldwide sales rights to Spanish horror film ATROCIOUS. The project, which marks the directorial debut of 27-year-old Mexican Fernando Barreda Luna, recently had its world premiere at the 43rd SITGES International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, the biggest genre film festival in the world. Celluloid engaged the filmmakers immediately following the screening and finalized terms on a deal last week.
The film was shot entirely in Spain and produced by Luna’s business partner Jessica Villegas Lattuada on behalf of their production company Nabu Films and co-producer David Sanz on behalf of Silencio Rodamos.
In April of 2010, Spanish police reported the discovery of 37 hours of recorded evidence that shed new light on a gruesome murder investigation. The found footage documents a family of five spending their holidays at their summer house, where brother-and-sister Cristian and July Quintanilla pass the time investigating a terrifying local urban legend. As their investigation intensifies, strange occurrences in and around the house escalate rapidly, before culminating in unspeakable atrocities.
Launched in Cannes of this year, Celluloid Nightmares is a partnership between Hengameh Panahi’s Paris-based Celluloid Dreams and Los Angeles-based XYZ Films, founded by partners Nate Bolotin, Nick Spicer and Aram Tertzakian. The company is focused on the acquisition and worldwide sales of elevated genre films from around the globe.
Celluloid will be presenting buyers with an exclusive new trailer at the upcoming America Film Market.
“I’m thrilled that my film is in good hands,” said Luna. “Celluloid Nightmares brings a perfect balance of ambition and creativity to the table, and I’m amazed how well they grasp the genre.”
“ATROCIOUS is an unforgettably haunting film,” said Bolotin of Celluloid Nightmares. “Fernando Barreda Luna has masterfully crafted a story that will surely shock and terrify audiences everywhere.”
Luna is a talented and versatile writer, director, composer, musician, editor, designer and producer. He is represented by Danny Sherman and Josh Kesselman from Principal Entertainment.
Celluloid Nightmares’ AFM slate includes A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE which was acquired for English-speaking territories by Anchor Bay immediately following its world premiere at the recent Toronto International Film Festival; the buddy mockumentary FUBAR: GODS OF BLUNDER which opened Toronto’s Midnight Madness; and the Scandanavian actioner NORWEGIAN NINJA, a playful love letter to retro spy films, full of international intrigue and vintage special effects.
