Steven Spielberg Pulls Plug on Horror Movie Haunted

Born out of Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment’s desire to “make a scary film,” DreamWorks’ thriller Haunted was one of the top films on our radar, which is why we’re pretty bummed right now that the project may be dead in the water.

As reported by THR, DreamWorks has shut down production on the ghost story, which was set to begin filming in just a few weeks. The reason? Steven Spielberg himself was not a fan of the latest rewrite, which came courtesy of Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Scott Z. Burns, and he wants to go back to the drawing board.

The film had been greenlit based on a script by Chad and Carey Hayes (The Conjuring), and Rose Leslie was attached to star. Fresnadillo, in addition to co-writing a complete overhaul of the script, was also set to direct, but he’s now off the project. The rewrite reportedly turned the original script into a completely different film.

The studio hopes to continue to develop Haunted based on the original Hayes brothers’ script.

Haunted is a ghost tale said to have been inspired by Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw.
