Sundance 2016: Netflix Scoops Up Iranian Movie Under the Shadow
Netflix is one of the major players on hand at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, and though the event just kicked off today, they’ve already nabbed the rights to a horror film that’s been drawing favorable comparisons to The Babadook. Interest piqued? Read on for details!
Variety reports that Netflix has acquired worldwide streaming rights to Farsi-language film Under the Shadow, which was written and directed by Iranian filmmaker Babak Anvari. It will premiere on Friday night as part of Sundance’s Midnight section.
Under the Shadow will debut globally on Netflix later this year, shortly after a theatrical or alternative-platform release. The film’s theatrical rights have yet to be announced.

Synopsis:
Tehran, 1988: As the Iran-Iraq War rumbles into its eighth year, a mother and daughter are slowly torn apart by the bombing campaigns on the city coupled with the country’s bloody revolution. As they struggle to stay together amidst these terrors, a mysterious evil stalks through their apartment.
