Smith is Ruined

Production Weekly received word today that Carter Smith, director of music videos for bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros (not the same Carter Smith who wrote and directed the award-winning short film “Bugcrush”) has been hired on to bring Scott Smith’s The Ruins (book review) to the big screen.
The novel, Smith’s follow-up to A Simple Plan (which was made into a highly underated film by pre-Spider-Man Sam Raimi) finds a group of tourists in Cancun, Mexico, just trying to have a good time. Instead they join up with a German tourist, looking for his brother, and things go from bad to worse very quickly when they stumble upon the titular ruins.
The Ruins is set to begin filming in May. Hopefully Smith will be adept at bringing horror to screen, rather than just making it look pretty like other music videos-cum-film directors tend to do.
Hope that tourists will someday learn in our forums!
