ABC Officially Cancels The Whispers
By the time it wrapped up its first season, ABC’s “The Whispers” had lost a lot of steam – and a large chunk of its viewing audience – so it’s no surprise really that the network has officially cancelled the show as of today, especially considering, as Deadline explains, it’s been four months since the options on the cast expired.
The series premiered with a 1.5 Live+Same Day rating among adults 18-49 and 5.7 million viewers in the Monday 10 PM hour to become the network’s highest-rated summer scripted premiere since “Rookie Blue” in 2010, but that wasn’t enough as ratings for the show eroded throughout its run.
Had it been renewed, “The Whispers” producers had a plan for Season 2 that included expanding the scope of the implications caused by the events in the first season, which would have basically called for a new cast anyway.
“The Whispers” Season 1 starred Lily Rabe, Barry Sloane, Milo Ventimiglia, Derek Webster, Kristen Connolly, Kylie Rogers, and Kyle Harrison Breitkop. It was executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, and Zack Estrin. The pilot was written and co-executive produced by Soo Hugh, who also developed the series. “The Whispers” was produced by ABC Studios, with Amblin TV as co-producer.
Synopsis:
We love to play games with our children. But what happens when someone else starts to play with them, too? Someone we don’t know. Can’t see. Can’t hear. In “The Whispers,” someone or something – is manipulating the ones we love most to commit the unthinkable. In the country’s center of political power, Washington D.C., several kids have been talking about their imaginary friend, Drill. What the parents don’t know is that this friend is not as imaginary as they think. And when the mysterious games Drill convinces them to play turn dangerous, FBI child specialist Claire Bennigan is called in to investigate. What is it that Drill wants, and why does he – or it – only communicate with children? As the clock counts down, a suspenseful race will begin to save not only their families, but the world. Before it’s too late.
