SDCC 09: Will The Tingler Remake Make It to the Big Screen?

San Diego Comic-Con 2009While catching up with Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton at Comic-Con, Dread Central wanted to find out about the long-rumored remake of The Tingler that they had been attached to.

Melton said, “The Tingler was a job we got a few years ago because Columbia wanted to do a rated R monster movie. We both know and love the original film so much and we realized that we needed to write this because there hasn’t been a good monster movie for a long time.”

“Patrick and I decided that we wanted to have our version as an adult adaptation set in the medical world,” explained Dunstan. ”We re-invented the tingler itself with an alien feel to it so you could see its gestation. We let it loose in an environment with characters that audiences would care about. In a hospital, you would have to do a lock-down scenario because if this thing gets out, it would spread worse than the flu and then you’d be left with a nation drowning in their worst fears.”

So, where does The Tingler project stand? Both Melton and Dunstan are unsure but they do believe in the script that they delivered to Columbia.

I don’t think the studio had a good grasp on horror movies or what they were getting themselves into when they asked us to write the script. They didn’t know what to do with it. And now it’s just sitting there, dormant. Who knows if they’ll ever use it,” added Dunstan.
