Michael Dougherty burst onto the horror scene back in 2007 with Trick ‘r Treat, an anthology film that instantly became a Halloween classic. He makes his return to the genre with Krampus, and he’s got his sights set on Christmas this time around. Check out the first stills and two foreign trailers!

He’s not Freddy or Jason or Leatherface; this [isn’t an] unstoppable monster that kicks down your door and rampages and grabs you,” Dougherty told USA Today about the film’s titular villain. “If you study the myth, there’s something darkly playful about him. He’s having a good time doing what he does, and he enjoys the cat-and-mouse aspect of it.”

The horror-comedy tells the story of young Max (Emjay Anthony), who turns his back on Christmas as his dysfunctional family comes together and comically clashes over the holidays. When they accidentally unleash the wrath of Krampus, all hell breaks loose, and beloved holiday icons take on a monstrous life of their own. Now, the fractured family is forced to unite if they hope to survive.

Adam Scott plays the father, a workaholic and rather absent dad who has to step up for his family. Stefania Owen plays Scott’s daughter. Toni Collette plays the mother, a woman who pretends everything is perfect with her family via her elaborate meals but will also have to dig deep to protect her family. Allison Tolman is on board as Collette’s sister-in-law. David Koechner also stars as another father whose child has gone missing under mysterious circumstances.

Dougherty co-wrote the script with Todd Casey and Zach Shields, and Universal will release the movie on December 4, 2015.
