New Dungeons & Dragons Movie in Development

After the Hobbit franchise and with the current mega success of “Game of Thrones,” it comes as no surprise that Hollywood wants to make another high fantasy film series into a franchise.

The first D&D film was released back in 2000, just one year before LOTR made fantasy popular again, and was followed by two Syfy sequels. The film rights to Dungeons & Dragons has been in dispute lately, with a trial even occurring, but a deal between Warner Bros. and Hasbro has finally been reached.

Producer and President of Creative Development and Worldwide Production at Warner Bros. Greg Silverman had the following to say:

“We are so excited about bringing the world of Dungeons & Dragons to life on the big screen. This is far and away the most well-known brand in fantasy, which is the genre that drives the most passionate film followings. D&D has endless creative possibilities, giving our filmmakers immense opportunities to delight and thrill both fans and moviegoers new to the property.”

And we’ve got people who know their fantasy to provide the script: David Leslie Johnson, known for Wrath of the Titans, and Roy Lee, known for The Lego Movie and How to Train Your Dragon. Hasbro will also supervise the film to ensure that it stays true to the source material. The D&D boardgame occurs over several worlds, and the film will be set in the Forgotton Realm, one of the most popular.

Although the new film has just been announced, they’ve clearly made a lot of progress in pre-production so it probably won’t be long before a director is announced.

And the dragons will rise once more. Let’s just hope that there’s no Marlon Wayans this time.
