The Chosen: Forbidden Cave Explores Exorcism and Possession in South Korea

You can’t have one exorcism/demonic possession movie without another — or five. These flicks seem to travel in packs. Shortly after The Vatican Tapes bows in theaters across the United States, director Kim Hwi’s exorcism-oriented outing The Chosen: Forbidden Cave (previously known as Exorcist will arrive in South Korea. Does it prove my theory that exorcism movies come in waves? Eh, not really, but it did give me something to ramble on about for a minute or so.

What’s amusing about The Chosen are the different summaries lurking on various Asian cinema websites. For example, the good folks over at Han Cinema describes Forbidden Cave as a “movie based on the motive of a horror novel, in the background of a cave which was said to be the home of a giant snake.” Vague, yes, but they honestly had me at “giant snake.”

AsianWiki, meanwhile, takes things a bit further.

Jin-Myung (Kim Sung-Kyun) is a psychiatrist and exorcist. With his assistant, Ji-Kwang (Kim Hye-Seong), they attempt an exorcism on Geum-Joo (Yoo-Sun). She suffers from a bizarre phenomenon. They then face a powerful existence within Geum-Joo. Extreme horror arises out of her.

The Chosen: Forbidden Cave hits cinemas in South Korea on August 20. I’m not sure when or if this will find its way to North America, but considering our neverending fascination with exorcism movies, I wouldn’t be surprised if someone decided to pick this up for distribution.
