Cannabis & Chill: 5 Trippy Horror Films To Stream While Under The Influence

Two of my main thrills in life are watching horror movies and indulging in cannabis products. So, when presented with the opportunity to speak to both in a single article, my brain melted, and then I died. Luckily, I quickly bounced back from my untimely demise and also managed to overcome my liquified cerebrum. So, here I am to talk about a handful of horror films that are, objectively, even better when enjoying your favorite forms of cannabis.

Make no mistake, dear reader, you won’t find the obvious choices here. Of course, you know you can pop on any entry in the Evil Bong franchise when you’re in the mood for stoner horror. But I prefer to eschew the obvious in favor of mixing things up a bit. And that’s just what I will be doing here. This list will focus on films that do not qualify as stoner flicks. Instead, these are cinematic triumphs that have the potential to be even more enjoyable while you’re just vibing. So, grab your edibles, gather the snacks, and behold five horror films that are even more enjoyable under the influence!

Inferno

If I didn’t possess a remarkable level of self-restraint, I would have simply populated this list entirely with titles from auteur director Dario Argento’s prolific filmography. His work is so uniquely suited to watching in a state of bemused awe. Among his body of work, Inferno stands out as especially well-suited to pairing with the devil’s lettuce. Its vivid and intoxicating colors start to feel as if they may dance right off the screen. And if you’ve indulged enough, who is to say those intoxicating colors won’t do just that?

The picture’s strange and surreal qualities become even stranger and more surreal when one is indulging. I couldn’t count the number of times I have sat, mouth agape, basking in the glory of the underwater sequence while enjoying the electric lettuce.

Inferno

 Evil Dead

Sam Raimi is a master of the macabre. And Evil Dead is easily one of his most noteworthy offerings. In addition to being top-notch cinema, the film is also a great choice to put on while partaking in the sinful spinach. The vine attack and the shaky camerawork are already dreamlike and intense when sober. But when you’re melting into the couch, those elements (among others) hit even more intensely.

Evil Dead is unique and innovative, making it not quite like anything to come before or after it. And, naturally, cannabis intensifies the experience and is likely to make this near-perfect horror film even more enjoyable.

The Evil Dead

Dead Alive

This riotous gore-fest may seem like an unlikely choice for a stoned night at home. But, as many seasoned stoners know, certain strains can help slow down one’s thought process. It can allow a person to really connect with their experience. I love taking in a splatter classic like Dead Alive when I am able to tune everything else in the world out and just zero in on the total madness that unfolds within.

Upon watching this Peter Jackson splatter classic while blitzed, I usually find myself saying something along the lines of “Lionel is being super aggressive with that lawnmower, right now, man. Hey, man, where did all the Funyuns go?”

Dead Alive horror

Suspiria

Like InfernoSuspiria possesses a color palette that makes me want to lick my television screen. The flick is eye-catching and feels a bit like a fever dream. Argento’s style over substance approach is an intoxicating delight for the senses that is only improved upon when cannabis is added to the equation.

Additionally, that peculiar dance sequence where Suzy looks like she’s about to topple over, yet her instructor insists she keep going is always a little peculiar. But when ‘elevated’ I often find myself reading way too much into that scene and applying logic where logic wasn’t meant to be applied. I start asking myself what the other dancers are thinking about her flailing around like a weed in the wind and wondering why they don’t stop to help her. Then, I question Suzy’s level of experience as a dancer. And then I get the irresistible urge to reenact the entire sequence in my living room for an audience of zero. Don’t believe me, partake (where legal) and give it a watch. I suspect you will find even more to love about this surreal effort.

Tucker & Dale vs. Evil

This brilliant horror-comedy makes the cut because of its versatility. You can either appreciate Tucker & Dale vs Evil on the basis of it being funny as hell and surprisingly brutal. Or, if you’re in a contemplative mood, you can wax philosophical on the ingenious dynamic between the leads, only to stop mid-sentence because you can’t quite remember what it is you were talking about. Additionally, the film’s best moments are made even better when you have the giggles, courtesy of that spliff you just hit.
