‘The Barn: Part III’ Director Justin M. Seaman Discusses His Creature Feature Trilogy

Director Justin M. Seaman, the mind behind indie horror darlings The Barn and The Barn: Part II, sat down with Dread Central to discuss the final film in his trilogy, The Barn Part III, which is now in post-production. Plus, he provided us with some exclusive images of the film’s monsters.

Seaman wrote the screenplay for the third film alongside cinematographer Zane Hershberger, and the cast will include Courtney Gains, Liam Yaker, Kelli Maroney, Kansas Bowling, Jim Krut, and Caroline Travers. Gains and Maroney will be playing Josh and Heather Harper, the siblings featured in the first and second Barn movies. The Barn: Part III is produced by Seaman’s company, Nevermore Production Films, alongside Blood Moon Pictures.

The original film focuses on two friends who accidentally awaken a sinister presence when they stumble upon an abandoned barn on Halloween night. The Barn: Part II focuses on an ancient evil released on Halloween. Although Seaman remains tight-lipped about the plot of the third entry, he has stated that it will take place in the 2000s, the most recent timeframe for the series so far. He also mentioned that The Barn: Part III will be more serious in tone than the last two installments, but he was quick to stress that there will still be plenty of silly monsters killing people in ridiculous ways.

Most of the questions raised in the early films will also be answered in Part III, so fans will hopefully be satisfied by the conclusions the new film offers. And rest assured, the practical gore from the first two movies will certainly be making a comeback. Seaman offered plenty of other interesting details about the upcoming film in the interview, so be sure to read on to learn more about The Barn: Part III.

Dread Central: Can you give us an overview of what The Barn Part III will entail?

Justin M. Seaman: If you are a part of the audience that has followed the franchise, you can see the progression of the films and the story. Part one took place in the 1980s and allowed us to soak up all the beautiful nostalgia that came with that decade and lay the foundation for the story I wanted to tell of the two teenage boys (Sam and Josh) and their derailed Halloween adventure. Part two led us into the 1990s with the continuation of their tale, but the main focus was on the final girl, Michelle, and her friend Heather, and the journey of trying to bring back their missing friends. Now we jump into the 2000s to end the story. We find out what happened after the events of part two, how they changed things for everyone, and how the past will affect the future.

DC: How did you approach the script this time?

JMS: This time around, the story is much more serious in tone. Parts I and II vibed with the feel of those decades. Once you get into the 2000s horror, the camp is toned down much more. So, this film is darker and more dramatic in some sense. However, the camp will always be there when you have a Corncob-headed Scarecrow and Pumpkin Man killing people. [Laughs] But I wanted to keep a good sense of what The Barn films were about and not deviate too much for the finale. So I brought in longtime friend and The Barn cinematographer Zane Hershberger to help co-write the script and make sure that anytime I seemed to stray, he’d help keep the heart of the story centered and focused to make sure we tied this all back together.

DC: Will this be the most ambitious entry in the series to date?

JMS: Absolutely, in terms of everything, really. I think you will see from the script to the cinematography, acting, locations, and most importantly, the creatures that this one is on another level. Special FX artist Cody Ruch and his assistant Samantha Sanford knocked it out of the barn on this one! So many practical effects, I’ve lost track. It’s an ’80s horror kids’ dream come true.

DC: Without giving too much away, can you describe who or what will be doing the killing this time?

JMS: Of course, we will see the return of The Boogeyman, Hallowed Jack, and CandyCorn Scarecrow, and in true The Barn fashion, they will be updated just like Michael and Freddy from film to film. This is the best and scariest they’ve ever looked. More creatures and critters will appear in this one, but that’s a surprise!

DC: And can you discuss the cast?

JMS: You will see some familiar faces from the previous entries, plus a slew of newcomers. Tristan Olsen and Amanda Bryne star as Kyle and Megan, our curious town teens. We’ve also brought in Courtney Gains (Children of the Corn) and Kelli Maroney (Chopping Mall) to take over the adult roles of the brother and sister duo Josh and Heather Harper, who last reunited at the end of The Barn Part II. I know a lot of people want to know how this will all work as far as the story goes, but all I can say is you’ll have to wait to see the film.

DC: And will the spectacular practical gore effects from the first two movies be making a comeback?

JMS: Some of the stuff that Cody has accomplished on this film has been insane. Without giving anything away, not only is the gore great, but wait until you see the animatronics!

DC: If it is not too early to disclose, could you discuss the soundtrack?

JMS: It is a bit too early at the moment, but it will be just as banger as the rest!

DC: What will fans of the first two movies take away from The Barn Part III?

JMS: I hope that fans of the last two films see that this one was everything we wanted to do in the other films, we just never had the budget to accomplish it. Hopefully, if nothing else, they appreciate all the effort everyone, from the crew to the case,t put into making this film come to life.

On that note, we are in the final stretch of filming with post-production beginning soon. Our Indiegogo is still live, and we can use all the help we can get. We have new perks launching as well as exclusive perks still available. Please help us complete the most ambitious chapter of the franchise.
