Kathryn Newton Gets Revenge in Thriller ‘Hot Year’

Roxy Sophie Sorkin will make her feature directorial debut with Hot Year, an indie coming-of-age revenge thriller she also wrote, Deadline reports.
It’s another genre film for Kathryn Newton, who has appeared in everything from Freaky to Abigail, Lisa Frankenstein, and the more recent Ready or Not 2. She’s also set to line White Elephant for Eli Craig.
Set against the eerie backdrop of a small Pacific Northwest town during a relentless heatwave, Hot Year follows two childhood best friends whose bond is pushed to the brink after a revenge plan against an ex-boyfriend spirals into a violent incident they can’t take back. Over the course of one feverish night, the pair must navigate the consequences of their actions as buried trauma, loyalty, and identity collide.
Also cast are Storm Reid (The Nun II, The Invisible Man), Dove Cameron (Love Me Dead), J. Smith Cameron (Succession), and Owen Painter (Wednesday).
“Hot Year is an exploration into brutal honesty and boiling, seething, grotesque womanhood,” described Sorkin. “It’s a movie I wish I had held dear when I was 18. It’s a forehead kiss and a spit in the face. Be prepared to wear fairy wings and bring Fireball.”
Production is set to begin in Oklahoma this May.
