Acclaimed Short ‘Mimic’ Is Getting a Feature [Exclusive]

Mimic

At last year’s 2025 Panic Fest, I had the pleasure of checking out Thomas Edward Hindy’s Mimic. In my brief review blurb, I wrote:

Thomas Edward Hindy’s Mimic was a natural favorite of mine because there are few things I love more than body-double horror movies. Something about an entity or force beyond our understanding replicating our form is terrifying in some deeply human, existential way. It’s why the likes of Philip Kaufman’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers have endured for decades, widely considered one of the scariest movies ever made. When something can replicate who we are, some core part of our humanity is lost. The horror genre revisits the well pretty regularly in everything from slashers (consider Scream 3’s voice changer) to ghost stories (The Others), and Mimic is body-double horror on steroids. It’s brief, violent, and frightening.

While the release (and success) of Obsession and Backrooms suggest YouTube is the new digital frontier of burgeoning horror talent, I remain a traditionalist in a lot of senses, and it’s why I always make it a point to check out the Shorts Block at festivals every chance I get. To me, that’s where the talent is; unbridled, subversive filmmakers doing some of the coolest stuff you’ve ever seen. And, luckily, Hindy’s Mimic is getting the feature film treatment, and we can exclusively announce all you need to know about what’s poised to be one of the most exciting horror releases of the year.

Hindy is currently developing a Mimic feature and hopes to bring his singular monster to Hollywood. He shared, “The short film has definitely been a beta test to see how audiences respond to the IP, both physically in person and on screen. As I plan the feature, I know exactly what people loved about the short and crave more of in the future, and I can’t wait to give it to them.”

Mimic, which won Best Creature FX: Short at Panic Fest (2025), Best Horror Short at Yellowstone International Film Fest (2025), and Best Student Short at the ATL Horror Fest (2024). Horror fans in LA will have a chance to meet the Mimic for themselves, too! At the Dances With Films fest, the cast and crew of Mimic will be bringing the monster to the Orange Carpet on June 27. In their words, “Be sure to take photos with him, as well as see if he mimics you…if you dare.”

Hindy, alongside cast members Ashlee Weber (Susan) and Zach Davis (the Mimic), are championing a new era of horror. As noted before, the genre is richer than ever, and Hollywood is presently in a space where it’s hungry for new horror IPs. A good monster goes a long way, and Mimic certainly has one. I’m personally championing the development of a Mimic feature, and my sincere hope is that audiences will, too. And next time you’re at a film festival, make an effort to check out the block of short films. There’s so much great stuff there. It’s how I discovered Mimic, and it might be how you discover the next great thing, too.

Here’s the short’s official synopsis: “Susan, a working-class mother, returns home to discover her family has gone missing. As she searches the seemingly empty house, she comes face-to-face with a sinister entity who aims to mimic her body language. In a desperate attempt to save her life, Susan learns to outsmart the entity but soon discovers the horrifying truth behind her family’s disappearance.”
