Need More ‘Sinners’ Content In Your Life? Follow These 10 Black Creators On Instagram

If the internet reaction to Sinners has taught us anything, it’s that many people don’t know how to discuss Black cinema. Unintentionally (or through blatant ignorance), many critics, outlets, and content creators have been saying the quiet part out loud. There have been a ton of silly takes that have become loud reminders that we need so many more Black critics, interviewers, etc. Luckily, a few amazing Instagram accounts have been breaking up the nonsensical Sinners discourse. This made me realize it was time for another list of Blerds to follow. So, add these 10 content creators to your rotation immediately if you want a better social media experience.
AJ + Kristie | In Love with Horror
Instagram: inlovewithhorror
While AJ and Kristie have a ton of horror content you should check out, I am here to highlight their Sinners videos. Dissecting the couples in the film seemed like a natural entry point for the married duo. However, I love Kristie’s shout-out to the Director of Photography, Autumn Durald Arkapaw. Autumn made history when she became the first woman to film a feature on 65mm and IMAX. It’s an interesting and important milestone to celebrate as the film continues breaking records and resonating with its large audience. Many content creators forget to celebrate the various departments behind the scenes that are equally important to getting our favorite movies made. So, this clip makes me happy because it gives Autumn her flowers while giving a quick peek at what filming with that equipment looks like.
Ali Graham
Instagram: lil_ye
Most millennials know how difficult it is to be a content creator. However, most of us can only imagine how much harder it is for creators whose chosen medium is pixel art. That did not stop Ali from creating this cute and viral piece inspired by Sinners. To put it over the top, the scene is set to the “Magic What We Do” to make you stop and pay attention to the details. Whether you are mesmerized by an animated version of Pearline crawl across stage, or Cornbread and Smoke watching the vampires play outside, there is so much to take in. The only principal cast member missing is Bo. However, we can assume he is out getting the car. Do yourself a favor and sit with this because you will probably enjoy seeing your favorite characters in this form.
Dimitri / Dimi
Instagram: dimeeeach
Dimitri has been winning people over with his music mashups and humor for years. So, many of us hoped he would do one of his videos from the POV of a person attending a wedding where the bride and groom are fans of Sinners. However, he outdid himself with the infectious remix of Remmick’s “Rocky Road to Dublin”. He did not stop there, though. He also donned a bloody old-timey shirt that nearly took Instagram out. Not only is this clip funny, but the track also slaps. You should follow Dimitri, and someone needs to hire him because he never misses behind a turn table. He is easily one of the most original creators on the social media streets.
The Fanboy Fighter
Instagram: fantasticfrankey
The Fanboy Fighter is one of the best in the game. Like most Blerds, she is a resource for so many areas of nerd culture. However, it was her Sinners coverage that changed me from a casual fan to a more frequent viewer. Frankey has so many reels dissecting different characters, themes, etc. However, one of my favorites is her video explaining why Mary is catching heat from fans. She reminds her viewers that in the era the movie is set in, Mary is considered a Black woman who is passing. So, she has privileges afforded to her because of her skin color. She would also know that she is putting her nearest and dearest in danger because of her skin color. Frankey has so many videos unpacking scenes and characters in this film. You should watch them all after making sure you follow this content creator.
David
Instagram: fauxtivational_speaker
As Sinners fever swept through the internet, no podcaster was safe. David unpacked the racial implications of the film and the direct parallels to American systemic racism. His breakdown of white supremacy as he connects the dots to racism being rooted in jealousy is by far the heaviest take on this list. However, it’s impossible to ignore his very valid points. More importantly, one of the reasons it’s crucial to seek out Black content creators is because we have a different lived experience. We are better equipped to deal with these difficult conversations with the nuance they deserve. After all, we grew up dealing with racism, while many other creators had the privilege to learn about it later in life.
Mel Mitchell
Instagram: itsmelmitch
Mel Mitchell is a comedian most of us fell in love with on TikTok. The popular podcaster is known for her impressions of Black Muggle Moms at Hogwarts. However, her brand of humor knows no bounds, and she is one of the Black content creators who dropped some of the funniest Sinners-inspired content. Mel’s impression of a random bystander in the juke joint, or the one where she pretends to be a woman hearing the sexy Smoke Stack Twins are coming back to town, are great. However, her capturing the energy of the internet’s bad takes on the movie is my favorite video.
Michael | BlackGayComicGeek
Instagram: blackgaycomicgeek
BlackGayComicGeek should be on everyone’s radar. Michael’s enthusiasm, knowledge, and love for geek culture radiates in every video. While we usually look to him for a fun take on popular IP, it is his conversation on Sinners that I am choosing to highlight. He hosted a very insightful conversation with @k8dee16 and @virgo_blade. In the clip I chose, they discussed the character of Grace, whose decision to invite the vampires inside has the internet split. As people were fighting on socials, Michael made a space to talk about the implications of why Grace did what she did.
Nicque Marina
Instagram: nicquemarina
Nicque Marina is another genre-agnostic comedian who happens to be one of our strongest Blerds. Whether calling out racist comments about Black actors cast in popular IP, or making us laugh, Nicque is a pure delight to follow. Most of her content deserves your time and attention immediately. However, her impressions of the main characters reacting to Remmick asking to come inside made me giggle the hardest. She nailed it while also doing a cover of Oasis’ “Wonderwall”, which now lives rent-free in my head. It makes sense because the bit showcases many talents that made the internet obsessed with this content creator.
Rodney Barnes
Instagram: therodneybarnes
Everyone knows who Rodney Barnes is, but not everyone knows he is now on Instagram. I have been following his page for a while, so I was one of the people wondering if he would review Sinners. It turns out that some of his fans were more vocal about wanting his thoughts, and he finally gave us what we all wanted. While it was safe to assume that this iconic figure would love the film as much as we all do, we love to watch your faves talk about their favorite parts. Barnes did not disappoint. So, I am happily using this video as an excuse to tell you he is on Instagram now.
Juju Green
Instagram: straw_hat_goofy
Juju has a ton of awesome interviews, hangouts with Ryan Coogler, and videos breaking down different aspects of Sinners. Some of my favorite videos are of Juju and Coogler’s budding bromance, like in the video above. While this account is not strictly dedicated to horror, it is for the Blerds and the culture. Whether he is breaking down a new entry in the MCU, or analyzing specific parts of a genre movie we love, straw_hat_goofy is always a good time. He should be on your list when looking for Black content creators who are passionate about their work.
