‘Terrifier 4’ Will Ring in the New Year With a 2027 Release Target

It took a long five years between Terrifier and Terrifier 2 to hit theaters. I helped acquire it, market it, distribute it, and do the whole enchilada; I lived the entire process from the front lines. One thing I can say about Damien Leone, the director and creator of the franchise, is that he passionately cares about his fans, almost to a fault.

But fans are what drive everything.

He built that fanbase through one-on-one interactions, convention appearances, and genuine appreciation for the horror community that embraced the films early on. Between Damien, David Howard Thornton (who plays Art the Clown), producer Phil Falcone, and everyone else involved, the team spent years boots on the ground, shaking hands, taking photos, and personally thanking fans for supporting this insane little indie slasher franchise that somehow exploded into a worldwide phenomenon.

That’s part of why it was painful for them to take so long to get Terrifier 2 into theaters. So, after the unbelievable success of the sequel, Leone strapped on his boots and immediately got to work on Terrifier 3 to get another movie into theaters for the fans as quickly as possible.

Having been directly involved in producing that film, I can tell you right now: that timeline was a crunch.

It was hard. It was exhausting. It was nonstop.

Through sheer determination and incredible support from the team around him, Terrifier 3 ultimately made its theatrical debut on October 11, 2024, arriving less than two years after Terrifier 2 shocked the industry with its breakout success.

Now, when it comes to Terrifier 4, there’s clearly a balancing act happening between urgency and not wanting to rush the creative process just to hit a date.

With that said, Damien Leone has been actively working on the screenplay and keeping fans updated throughout the process on social media. Last week, he surprised everyone with a major reveal: Terrifier 4 is going to take place during New Year’s Eve.

As horror fans know, Terrifier 2 unfolded during Halloween, while Terrifier 3 fully embraced the Christmas season. Naturally, many assumed the next film might jump to Valentine’s Day. Instead, Leone appears to be taking the franchise into an entirely different holiday setting.

What’s especially interesting is that Terrifier 4 could pick up immediately after the events of Terrifier 3, creating a direct continuation similar to iconic horror franchises that flowed from one film into the next.

Halloween and Halloween II famously take place on the same night. Evil Dead II essentially continues directly from The Evil Dead. Even franchises like Friday the 13th Part 2 and Part III carried over narrative momentum in ways slashers typically avoided at the time.

That kind of connective tissue could make Terrifier 4 feel even bigger and more relentless than its predecessors.

And then came another interesting update from Leone himself.

Responding to a fan who asked whether the movie could arrive this year, Leone said the plan is for Terrifier 4 to hit theaters in 2027.

Quite frankly, a 2026 release was never realistic. We’re already approaching June, and there’s simply no way it was even logistically possible to get it in theaters this year.

But 2027? That feels very possible.

With New Year’s Eve serving as the film’s backdrop, the release window is wide open. A late 2027 launch somewhere between September and December feels plausible, though a January 2028 release tied directly to the holiday itself also wouldn’t be shocking.

Either way, horror fans now officially have something massive to look forward to next year.

And honestly, this is a much bigger deal than people realize.

We don’t really have modern slasher icons carrying franchises the way we once did. A Nightmare on Elm Street is dormant. Friday the 13th remains stuck in development limbo outside of the upcoming Crystal Lake series. Halloween is constantly rebooting itself. Saw has slowed down. Texas Chain Saw Massacre continues searching for direction despite multiple projects reportedly in development.

Meanwhile, Art the Clown is alive and thriving.

That’s rare.

We are watching a modern horror icon being built in real time, organically, through fandom, practical effects, controversy, theatrical events, word of mouth, and pure independent filmmaking grit.

That almost never happens anymore.

Which is why the pressure surrounding Terrifier 4 is enormous.

How do you top Terrifier 3? How did Terrifier 3 top Terrifier 2? How did Terrifier 2 top the original Terrifier?

Somehow, Damien Leone keeps finding ways to do it.

It’s a tall order. Maybe an impossible one.

But if there’s anyone crazy enough to pull it off, it’s him.
