B-Sides: At the Hungry HeiferThis weekend’s B-Sides is kind of a cheat because it isn’t so much a song as it is a fake commercial jingle heard a few times throughout a film. If you’ve ever seen Critters, you know that once you’ve heard the “Hungry Heifer” jingle, good luck getting it out of your head the rest of the day.

A farming community becomes a smorgasbord for small, furry alien creatures that look like rolling hairballs with teeth. They eat, they grow, and they multiply.

One could also argue “eat, grow, and multiply” pretty much sums up the life cycle of the people that live in the Middle America farm town that gets invaded. If so, their restaurant of choice would no doubt be The Hungry Heifer, the eating establishment whose disturbingly catchy jingle is heard playing on TV and radio at various points in the 1986 cult favorite and its first 1988 sequel.

The Hungry Heifer jingle isn’t the sort of thing I’d normally consider for B-Sides, but after coming across this amusing video someone made, I couldn’t help myself. You might get it stuck in your head. It might even make you hungry. More likely, you’ll be overcome by the urge to watch Critters again.

And who is that singing the praises of the Hungry Heifer? That would Cynthia Garris, wife of b-movie maestro and Critters director Mick Garris. Much like Crites on the movie, it really does all go round.
