UPDATE:
This just in! Spoke with Rob and he confirmed he WILL be helming the C.H.U.D. remake!
Now this would be just plain weird ... But kinda cool at the same time.
Billboard.com just posted an article about Rob Zombie’s upcoming projects, everything from a White Zombie box set to the special edition of Halloween, and made mention in passing that the rocker cum director is attached to a remake of C.H.U.D..
Whoa now, what? Why? I mean, the original is a classic in its own right and a remake sure wouldn’t hurt, but why would Zombie tackle it? Billboard didn’t get confirmation from Zombie if that is his next film or not, so we’ll put this one in the “rumors” box for now.
Keep checking back; we’ll give you more when we know it!
Wonder if the C.H.U.D.s will be real or CG in the Dread Central forums!

Ok, I can see your point on barely scratching the surface...but how about an ORIGINAL idea? The Devil's Rejects was somewhat original, and definitely ending it the way that he did was original (why would anyone do that?) but it was still based off of a ripoff of the original TCM...mixed with one of his psychedelic music videos...but time will tell...

While I'd much prefer Rob to do something original again (i.e., what happened to the Western we heard about??), I can't fault him for wanting to put his own spin on the movies he (and we) grew up on. And I'm not so sure he won't eventually be considered one of the "greats". He's still a fairly young guy and certainly has a lot of years of moviemaking ahead. I'm thinking he's just barely scratched the surface of what he can accomplish.

He's continuing to learn and develop his craft - albeit in a very public way - but I feel that each movie he makes is an improvement (in some way) over the last one. Of course, he will never be considered one the 'horror greats', but he is certainly not harming the genre - is he?

What a waste of what was looking like a promising talent.

She'll be stripping down in the sewers in an underground trailer park at some point. Watch...

But how is he going to get his wife on a stripper pole for this one?

So ... will C.H.U.D. stand for Cunt Hording Underground Dickfaces?

As long as he manages to fit in at least one or two white trash characters, I'll be happy.

CHUD, the original is groovy. Dunno if Zombie can keep his tongue firmly in cheek if he red-does this.

You know? Honestly. The guy's name makes money at the movies and he has all the resources to do anything he wants. He can write his own checks yet he seems hung up on living out these teenage fantasies about being the director of his favorite movies instead. He's the worst kind of fanboy.
I hope this isn't true.
