Sigourney Weaver and Neill Blomkamp Talk Upcoming Alien Film; Genetic Sibling to Aliens

At some point in the not so distant future, Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Chappie) is directing his own Alien film, and Ridley Scott is attached to produce while Sigourney Weaver is set to star. A dream project, to say the least, and both Blomkamp and Weaver have spilled some more beans about it.

First up, Blomkamp talked briefly about the project in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, mostly regarding how Weaver came to be directly involved in his fantasy project.

Over the years, I came up with a story for a film in that universe that I wanted to make,” said the director. “And then when I talked to [Sigourney Weaver] about her experience making those films and what she thought about Ripley and everything else, it informed and changed the film I wanted to make into something different.”

It just sort of stuck with me. A year later, when post-production was winding down on Chappie, I started fleshing out the idea for a film that would contain Sigourney. Fox never knew. I just worked on it when I could. Before I knew it, I had this really awesome film with a lot of artwork and a lot of backstory. And then I didn’t know whether I was going to make it or not. So I just kind of sat on it for a while.”

Sky Movies also conducted interviews with both Blomkamp and Weaver, wherein the actress talked about her desire to finish off the story of iconic character Ellen Ripley, once and for all.

I would love to take Ripley out of, sort of, orbiting around outer space and give a proper finish to what was such an excellent story,” said Weaver. “So when somebody like Neill Blomkamp suddenly said, ‘Well, I’m interested in finishing the story,’ my little ears perked up.”

As for Blomkamp, he revealed to Sky Movies that he’s looking for his film to be a “genetic sibling” to Aliens, meaning that he’s essentially aiming to disregard all subsequent installments in the franchise. Sounds fine to me!
