Purge: Anarchy Hoax Claims 142 Murdered by Chicago Re-EnactorsAs you may have seen, a news story coming out of Chicago made the rounds across the internet this past weekend, claiming that 142 people had been murdered by a group of teens whose killing spree was inspired by The Purge: Anarchy (review).

It’s precisely those kinds of stories that give horror movies a bad name, but thankfully, this one wasn’t legit.

The website Cream Bmp Daily reported on the story Friday, which was packed with alleged quotes from both civilians and police officers.

The mass killing was described as a re-enactment of The Purge: Anarchy, taking place shortly after the movie hit theaters on Friday night. The site reported that no arrests had been made and that police would be closely monitoring social media sites, waiting for the teenage killers to brag about their crimes.

Fortunately, the obviously fake story was shortly thereafter debunked by The Epoch Times, who revealed that it was a complete and utter hoax. As it turns out, Cream Bmp Daily is a satire website, and the faux report was their idea of a joke.

Nothing funnier than a mass killing spree, right?! Oy vey.

The Purge: Anarchy, the sequel to summer 2017’s sleeper hit that opened to No. 1 at the box office, sees the return of writer/director/producer James DeMonaco to craft the next terrifying chapter of dutiful citizens preparing for their country’s yearly 12 hours of anarchy.

The sequel stars Frank Grillo, Michael K. Williams, Zach Gilford, Carmen Ejogo, Jasper Cole, Zoe Borde, Chad Morgan, and Kiele Sanchez.

Returning with DeMonaco to produce are Blumhouse Productions’ Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity and Insidious series) alongside Sébastien K. Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 17, Four Lovers) and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay (Pain & Gain, Transformers franchise), Brad Fuller (The Amityville Horror, A Nightmare on Elm Street), and Andrew Form (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 17th).
