Q&A with Skateboarding Zombie Ollie Mongo and Some Exclusive New Artwork
It’s not every day, fright fans, one gets to interview the walking dead via e-mail so without further delay let me introduce Ollie Mongo: Skateborder, Zombie, New Jerseyan—hailing from Exits Unknown. He comes from the zombie future but through the magic of 1’s and 0’s has reached out to us in this present time to say hey, he’s undead and loving it. Ollie also wants nothing less than to share his world with us modern human beings. Dare you read ahead?
We now bring you Ollie, uncut and uncensored:
Q: SO, OLLIE, HOW DO YOU LIKE THE GARDEN STATE?
Ollie: Yo, Heather, it’s rad to meet ya! Do ya skate? To answer your question, I dig the Garden State and love Asbury Park, my home town. I live in the year 2210… things have changed around here since the Apocalypse. I hear Asbury Park used to be the Jewel o’ Jersey, but now it’s a grey ashen place and nothin’ grows around here except weeds between the cracks and the number o’ zombies!
Q: HOW DID YOU AND TILLY MEET?
Ollie: I’ve been skateboardin’ since I was a baby. Yep, that sounds weird, but it’s the Zombie Truth! I was three when my dad took me to skate the Asbury Park boardwalk; I was fast even then. I did a triple flip under that wall mural of the guy with a smiley face. That was Tilly, and somethin’ supernatural happened - he talked to me! Strangely, no one else could hear him! Tilly still communicates telepathically with me. He’s lived on that wall since before the Apocalypse. Oh yeah, he gave me your e-mail an’ I sent it Yahoo Time Warp if you’re wonderin’!
Q: HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE A ZOMBIE?
Ollie: BTW, I’m half-zombie! I was born with this rare ZH gene (Zombie/Human). It means I’ve got empathy toward humanoids and a few supernatural powers, unlike the other zombies that roam planet Earth. To be honest… I feel like an outsider. If ya noticed, I’m blue and don’t fit in anywhere with zombies or humans. The upside… one of my best friends is Yuki. She’s a humanoid stunt girl, and we skate rings around the gang of Asbury Park zombies, aka the APZ’s – they're a pack o’ wolves.
Q: DO YOU THINK EVERY HUMAN SHOULD TRY IT AT SOME POINT?
Ollie: If Dr. Hans Crash, Asbury Park’s resident evil and #1 jerk has his way, that might just happen. 40% of Earth's population in 2210 are zombies. It’s ‘cuz humans with Type O blood ate fruit from the toxic Tszipps plant. The Tszipps was outlawed when Congress passed the Zombie Act. Urban Legend has it that Hans Crash has a hidden Tszipps farm on the outskirts of Jersey. That’s cool, though – Yuki and I’ve been looking for his fields for a long time – we’ll find 'em. He tests organisms that increase Tszipps' potency to work on all blood types. Would I recommend every human try it at some point and turn zombie? Not if we want to save planet Earth!
Q: ZOMBIE HORROR FILMS: TRUTH OR HUMAN PROPAGANDA?
Ollie: Neither… it was awesome prediction! Whatever humans dreamed up about horror films back in the day, history proves you dudes were spot on! In the year 2210 it’s reality! I LOVE watching all those crazy films you guys made like Dawn of the Dead, Resident Evil and Planet Terror. Me and my friends sit around on movie nights and laugh our heads off! Hey, “The Walking Dead” series is fresh! I’d love to see those deadheads on skateboards!
Q: ANY TIPS ON BRAIN EATING?
Ollie: Because I’ve got the ZH gene, I’m half-human, and the thought o’ brains, well, kinda makes me wanna puke. After the Apocalypse when the Zombie Act was passed, all zombies were forced to eat government approved Veggie Cuisine. It controls their natural instinct! Government chefs whipped up secret sauces to spice up zombies' taste buds like Shaun of the Dead BBQ Sauce and Zombieland Honey Mustard Gas. My personal fave is Sopranos Zesty Zombie Blow Out over oatmeal. Yum!
Q: IF OUR READERSHIP WANTS A PEEK INTO YOUR FUTURE ZOMBIE WORLD, WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO KEEP IN TOUCH?
Ollie: I dig makin' new friends! Tell everyone to 'like' my Ollie Mongo Facebook page. I'd be stoked to answer any questions and give you guys a window into life after the Apocalypse. It'd be rad to hear what's goin' on in your retro world, too..
Well, thank you, Ollie. And thanks to Tilly for putting us in touch. I'm sure we will talk again. In the meanwhile please visit Ollie’s page for all things zombie, and check out a few pieces of artwork he provided below that are exclusive to Dread Central.
