D23 Frankenweenie Wrap-Up

One might think Dread Central would have nothing to report from a convention packed to the gills with fans of Tinker Bell and Mickey Mouse, but those folks forget Disney often likes to dip its animated toe into the world of the creepy. It is with this in mind we sent secret agents to infiltrate the insidious event they call D23!! (See? It even sounds creepy!)

Our target? A Tim Burton creation called Frankenweenie! Steve Sievers sat through the lengthy presentation for Disney's upcoming films to bring back these bits of info ...

Producers Don Hahn and Allison Abbate were on hand for the festivities. Frankenweenie is the first movie filmed in stop-motion, in black and white AND rendered into 3D.

The film is set to come out in October 2012. It's currently shooting in London with all characters designed by Tim Burton and voices by Martin Landau, Martin Short, and Winona Ryder. Danny Elfman is back to score the film.

The story follows a boy named Victor and his dog Sparky. One day when Victor is playing baseball, he hits the ball into the street. Sparky runs after it but gets run over by a car and dies. Victor is determined to bring his dog back to life and turns his attic into a Frankenstein-ish laboratory to do just that.

Tim Burton had a video message to the audience saying the film is heavy influenced by classic horror movies he loved as a child; therefore, he wanted it to be in black and white to capture that old school horror feel. He created some interesting characters for the film including a turtle-godzilla type creature and a hamster mummy. They then brought out a puppet of Sparky the dog and began to show how they pose the dog for shooting.

One of the producers said "Sparky is 4 inches tall and is made entirely from silicon, just like a girl from the Jersey Shore."

Look for the flick in theatres on October 5th, 2012.
