The Conjuring Summons Big Dollars at the Box Office, R.I.P.D. Comes in DOAIt’s the thing we love to see the most, an original R-rated horror film kicking major ass at the box office. And this week we got that – big time. The Conjuring destroyed the competition, raking in a whopping $41.5 million, nearly doubling its closest competition. R.I.P.D. did not fare as well.

The huge haul for The Conjuring was even more impressive, considering the fact that the film was made for a scant $20 million. A real bargain as far as filmmaking is concerned. This was not the case for the other horror-ish film released this weekend. R.I.P.D., which featured big name actors Ryan Reynolds and Jeff Bridges and carried a price tag of $130 million, shit the proverbial bed with a paltry take of under $13 million. Ouch!

R.I.P.D. actually came in at number seven, behind Pacific Rim, which was the sixth biggest movie at the theaters in its second week in release ($15.9 million this week, $68.2 million total take). World War Z managed to stay in the top 10, hanging in at the number nine spot with a $5.2 million take to bring the Brad Pitt thriller to a very tasty $186.9 million after a five-week run.

The success of The Conjuring already has talk of a sequel brewing. It’s been a great year for Vera Farmiga, who is fresh off the success of “Bates Motel” and now finds herself in the number one movie in the country. Even Gru and his minions couldn’t stop The Conjuring! Yay horror!
