David Hayter to Walk The Devil's Mile
Question: What does Metal Gear Solid's lead character Solid Snake have in common with Watchmen and the first two X-Men films? That's a real head scratcher, isn't it? The answer is David Hayter.
Not only does this renaissance man provide the distinctive voice for Solid Snake but he also wrote the screenplay for Watchmen and both X-Men films mentioned above. That alone is a pretty nice resume, considering the successes of the films and the fact that Hayter has voiced Solid Snake in about a dozen video games. However, Hayter also has a love of acting. And he'll get a chance to display his chops in the upcoming chiller The Devil's Mile.
Screenwriter Joseph O'Brien will be taking on the role of director for the film, helming his first feature. Maria Del Mar and Casey Hudecki co-star. Research has shown neither Del Mar or Hudecki have voiced any video game characters, but I'm sure they'd be open to the opportunity.
From the Press Release
David Hayter, known to millions of filmgoers as the screenwriter of the superhero hits X-Men, X2: X-Men United and Watchmen, and to millions of video game fans as the iconic voice of Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid franchise, is set to return to the screen – this time in front of the camera, playing a lead role in the upcoming independent horror film The Devil’s Mile, currently in pre-production.
The Devil’s Mile is the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Joseph O’Brien (Robocop: Prime Directives). In addition to being a longtime contributor to leading horror publications Rue Morgue and Fangoria, O’Brien most recently collaborated with filmmaker and Rue Morgue founder Rodrigo Gudino on the screenplay for the Gudino-directed remake of Cutthroats Nine starring Mads Mikkelsen and Harvey Keitel.
“I was aware of David’s work as a screenwriter, obviously,” says O’Brien “And I’ve certainly spent my share of dusk-til-dawn gaming sessions playing Metal Gear Solid. But I also knew he began his career as an actor. We wanted to cast someone unconventional, a little unexpected, to play this frightening but charismatic madman. We reached out to David, and we were thrilled when he agreed to come on board.”
Hayter plays Toby McTeague, the psychotic enforcer for a mysterious and powerful crimelord, who finds his own violent tendencies don’t hold a candle to the terrifying supernatural forces that lurk on the bleak stretch of back road known as The Devil’s Mile. His fans will recall that he actually began his career as an actor playing the human incarnation of the title character in director Steve Wang’s Guyver 2: Dark Hero. “I never lost my love for acting, but if I was going to come back to it, I really wanted the role to be something cool and different. When I read Joe's script, I thought it was very scary and really clever. It has a sharp intensity about it, and that extends to the characters. I couldn’t pass up the chance to play this guy. It’s a chance to display the more vicious side of my nature, which I usually keep in reserve for closed-door production meetings. Plus, it's a chance for my fans to see me in a slightly less heroic light. I'm very much looking forward to driving The Devil's Mile.”
Joining Hayter on his terrifying journey are Maria Del Mar ("24," Terminal City, Jekyll and Hyde) and newcomer Casey Hudecki. Handling special makeup and monster effects is Allan Cooke (Resident Evil: Afterlife, Silent Hill, Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer).
The Devil's Mile is a relentlessly paced hybrid of gritty crime thriller and Lovecraftian supernatural horror. The film follows a trio of kidnappers who take an ill-advised detour en route to deliver their hostages -- two teenage girls -- to their mysterious and powerful employer. When they accidentally kill one of the girls during a botched escape attempt, their simmering mistrust explodes into shocking violence. But what they thought was their worst case scenario is only the beginning, as they are engulfed by the hellish forces that haunt the road -- a road they realize they may never escape. Now captors and captive must fight together to escape the monstrous forces pursuing them and somehow survive...The Devil's Mile.
