What drove a seemingly mundane man to commit a series of acts so heinous that it captured the attention of a horrified nation? In the summer of 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer was arrested in Milwaukee and sentenced to 957 years in prison for killing 17 people and dismembering their bodies over a 13-year period. Stories of necrophilia and cannibalism added to the horror of Dahmer’s crimes. THE JEFFREY DAHMER FILES talks to those who knew Dahmer during and after his hidden killing spree. Recollections from Milwaukee Medical Examiner Jeffrey Jentzen, Police Detective Patrick Kennedy and Dahmer neighbor Pamela Bass, among others, are interwoven with archival footage and dramatized everyday scenes from Dahmer’s life, working collectively to disassemble the facade of an ordinary man leading an ordinary existence. The IFC Midnight theatrical release, directed by Chris James Thompson and co-written by Thompson, star Andrew Swant and Joe Riepenhoff, was praised as “mesmerizing and haunting” by Mark Olsen of the Los Angeles Times and “chillingly effective” by David Lewis of the San Francisco Chronicle.
