Judging from the severely mixed reviews coming out for Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful (review), this flick really seems as if it is a love it or hate it affair. Despite that, it’s projected to make bank, and Disney is already working on a sequel.

According to Variety the studio has commissioned a follow-up to Oz: The Great and Powerful from screenwriter Mitchell Kapner, who co-wrote the first film with David Lindsay-Abaire. While no plot details are yet available, Kapner can work with what’s featured in L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, which is public domain. The only hitch? He can’t use any of the iconic creative additions from the original film — Dorothy’s ruby slippers, for example, as Warner Bros. owns the 1939 film.

The original film, which opens on March 8th, follows Oscar Diggs (James Franco), who pulls one flim-flam too many and finds himself hurled into the fantastical Land of Oz. Franco’s co-stars include Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, and Zach Braff. The script, based on L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was written by Mitchell Kapner and David Lindsay-Abaire.

Synopsis:
When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is, until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz), and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great and powerful Wizard of Oz but into a better man as well.
