Sint is One Santa Looking to Give the Gift of Death While Slashing Records

Remember all that hubbub about Silent Night, Deadly Night here in the States when it first came out? Parents were up in arms because it had a killer dressed as Santa Claus. Ah, stupidity! How we love when you rear your head! The Dutch seem to have no such problems. In fact their new killer Christmas flick Sint is breaking records overseas.

According to Variety distributor A-Film claims Sint's opening weekend set a record for a Dutch movie rated 16 and above, dethroning Paul Verhoeven's Black Book.

Figures released Thursday by the Dutch Film Distributors' Association show Sint easily scored the biggest opening week for a Dutch film so far in 2010, taking E901,132 ($1.3 million) off 96 screens.

Its box office also stands up to U.S. product, beating the opening weeks of Jackass 3D and Due Date, while burying recent genre releases such as Piranha 3D and Paranormal Activity 2.

Holland celebrates the return of gift-bearing Sint Nicolaas each year in early December with Sint-themed kid flicks frequently released in late November to exploit the holiday buzz.

Filmmaker Dick Maas reverses the formula with a deranged Sint (Huub Stapel) kidnapping children and cutting a bloody swathe through the adult population.

Please .... bring this movie here ASAP!

NEXT STORY

We had our fair share of concerned school moms who tried to get the poster banned because it looked too grim for the unsoiled eyes of the young. For a short while, Sint became something of a public moral debate - which I'm pretty sure Dick Maas didn't disapprove of.

Haven't seen it myself yet, but as far as local reviews go, general opinion holds that the movie, while mildly entertaining, fails to be scary.

Sigh...

Sint has nothing to do with Christmas...
Sinterklaas is a childrens holiday that falls on the 5th of december.

The story does clarify that "Holland celebrates the return of gift-bearing Sint Nicolaas each year in early December". Bearing gifts ... in December ... you can't really blame people for making a connection with Santa.

Yes I can...

It's not like you have to go to a library, or travel somewhere to get this info...

It makes for very sloppy reporting, especialy in this day and age...
