Hellraiser: Revelations Finds its Pinhead

Hellraiser Revelations Finds its PinheadJust how bad were the last few Hellraiser sequels? I ask because the absolute last straw for me was the one in which Dean Winters fell victim to an inexplicably malicious Kirsty Cotton. And now it seems Dimension has gone ahead with a sequel so sloppy and half-assed that Doug Bradley has decided he won't be involved. What can that possibly tell you about the quality?

Regardless, the ever-diligent folks at Bloody-Disgusting have learned who will be stepping into Pinhead's robe for the upcoming Hellraiser: Arbitrary Noun Here. Stephan Smith Collins (pictured, right) will play the Lead Cenobite, as he menaces a duo who've somehow opened the puzzle box. He'll be joining the previously announced Devon Sorvari, Steven Brand, Sanny Van Heteren, Tracey Fairaway, Daniel Buran, Nick Eversman, and Jay Gillespie who will star as "Nico / Pseudo-Pinhead".

Director Victor Garcia (Mirrors 2) is directing from Gary J. Tunnicliffe's script. It does seem like a quick cash-in so the studio can hang onto the franchise until the inevitable remake can get off the ground but, again, I've got to ask: have the last few films been all that profitable for Dimension? And, honest show of hands, who is going to give this one a shot? When Pinhead told horror fans the world over "We have such sights to show you ..." it doesn't seem like this is what he had in mind.

Should I give this a shot? No. But I will. It's inevitable. It's Hellraiser, and it will sit there gnawing at me until I eventually pick it up. Maybe it will be a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed Inferno. It had a nice noir feel, and I liked the way the mystery unfolded. Deader wasn't too bad, either. At least it followed the formula of selfish obsession leading to damnation.

Don't get me started on Hellseeker, where they decided to ruin Kirsty's character for no reason at all, or Hellworld, which was as ridiculous as I can ever imagine a Hellraiser movie being.

I do actually have a glimmer of hope for this one. The writer and director have both turned out some decent content in the past. Tuncliffe has some cool Hellraiser fan films, and he is clearly in tune with and a fan of the Hellraiser universe. Garcia has directed two direct-to-dvd sequels that were both superior to the originals. So, will this be great? Probably not. Could it be the best of the direct-to-DVD Hellraiser sequels? Quite possibly. Faint praise, sure, but I'll keep an open mind.

I'll give you Inferno; that's the only Hellraiser film I own on DVD outside of the first two. I might pick up 3 and 4 one day, as they're okay. However, I refuse to subject myself to Hellseeker or Deader again. That being said, I do need to pick up Hellworld and watch it; call me a masochist.

honestly they should've stopped after two, Hell on Earth was very "opposite" of the first two and it sucked

To be honest, the only films in the series you need to see are the first two and maybe the third one if your standards are low. I skimmed through the last two that came out and remember nothing at all about them.

I pretty much gave up after part three.
