Curiously enough, even before the recent court ruling suspending the release of The Asylum’s latest mockbuster, Age of the Hobbits, Redbox’s website has a listing for the film, slating it for Redbox rental on December 31st.

The “Coming Soon” listing shows the exact same artwork but with the title Clash of the Empires in lieu of Age of the Hobbits. Presumably, that Redbox release with the alternate title will also scrapped due to the court injunction, but as of the time I am writing this, Clash of the Empires is still being listed on Redbox’s website.

Age of the Hobbits (review) may not be the only mockbuster affected by the Warner Brothers lawsuit. The Asylum had just recently announced Jack the Giant Killer starring Jane March and Ben Cross slated for DVD/Blu-ray release on March 12th, around the same time as Bryan Singer’s big budget Jack the Giant Slayer opens in theaters.

A giant beanstalk brings Jack to a land in the clouds filled with snarling, evil beasts. When the creatures make their way to the ground, Jack must figure out how to get back down before they destroy earth and everyone in it.

You may recall that Singer’s film was originally titled Jack the Giant Killer until the studio decided “slayer” sounded less violent than “killer” or something like that. The Asylum’s Jack the Giant Killer has now undergone a name change to simply The Giant Killer. Somehow I doubt it’s a coincidence seeing as how Jack the Giant Slayer is also being distributed by Warner Brothers.

Between this and this past summer’s litigation that forced their Battleship mockbuster American Battleship to change its title, perhaps the Mayans’ predictions of the end of the world in 2012 was really just them predicting the end of The Asylum mockbuster as we’ve come to know it.

Directed by Joseph Lawson, Age of the Hobbits stars Christopher Judge, Bai Ling, Sum Korng, Srogn, and Khom Lyly.
