Today The Cabin in the Woods makes its triumphant arrival on DVD and Blu-ray, and although there was an entire whiteboard full of monsters, we’ve managed to pick out five of our favorites to highlight! Next up… the merman.

The merman has come a long way since his days of doing Skeletor’s dirty work with BeastMan, Tri-Klops and TrapJaw. Okay, maybe the “Masters of the Universe” version, MerMan, is not the best example of a hideously frightening sea creature, but he’s not bad. He’s certainly a better example than, say…Ethel Merman. *rimshot* Sorry about that…ahem…okay, back to The Cabin

Hinted at throughout the film, the merman, like most of The Cabin in the Woods baddies, makes his appearance after the shit hits the proverbial fan. Slithering through the wreckage, we get a great look at the fish out of water, who looks to be conceived from Irish mythology. The merman is envisioned differently depending on what region you’re discussing. The Finnish version of the merman is said to be a handsome, bearded man with magical powers and the tail of a fish. Well, except the tail of the fish, that one is way off. In Greek mythology they were said to have green seaweed-like hair, a beard and trident. Getting closer, but still not quite right. Although the trident would have been a great addition. It’s Irish mythology that says mermen are “extremely ugly creatures with pointy green teeth, pig-like eyes, green hair and a red nose.” Bingo. We have a winner! That’s our merman.

The fact that mermen are certainly not your typical horror movie beasts makes them the perfect addition to The Cabin in the Woods (Blu-ray / DVD review). And, aside from the big belly laugh from the zombies’ scene, the reveal of the merman with his biggest fan, Hadley, is one of the biggest LOL moments in the film. Aside from perhaps the unicorn, the merman has to be the most surprising additions to the monster lineup. And a great addition he is. I’m hoping he gets a spin-off. I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing him do a number on Bikini Bottom. Sleep with one eye open, SpongeBob. Blub blub.
