Rest in Peace: Dan O'Bannon

Rest in Peace: Dan O'Bannon2009 has been mired in death. We lost a lot of icons over the past few months, and it's with a heavy heart that we report we've just lost another one. Dan O'Bannon, age 63, is no longer with us.

According to Harry Knowles at AICN:

"Just a few moments ago, I received a call from David Fein, the amazing producer behind that stunning ALIEN LEGACY dvd set, to tell me Dan O'Bannon had just passed away. Dan had been in the hospital this past week fighting to hang on, but lost the battle not too long ago - and David wanted to alert the world of the passing of one of Geek's great creators."

At press time it's not known what illness O'Bannon was facing, but I'm sure in his typical fashion he fought it tooth and nail. Dan's laundry list of credits reads like an essential genre viewing manual. He wrote such gems as Alien, Invaders from Mars, Lifeforce, Total Recall, etc. He did visual effects on Star Wars. He directed Return of the Living Dead. We could go on for hours.

Dan was truly one of us, and he will be missed more than words could ever illustrate. We here at Dread Central would like to take this time to offer our sincerest condolences to his family, constituents, and friends.

Thank you for the memories, brother. Godspeed.

NEXT STORY

No doubt Dan O'Bannon is really an icon. We will miss you all a lot. when it comes to horror movie, I still remember your "Return of the Living Dead", which was followed by several sequels. His "Alien" is another good example of excellent script.

ROTLD is a masterfully crafted film; Horror, Comedy, Whatever, it'll stand the test of time.

ROTLD and Alien are two of my all-time favorite movies; I'll certainly be watching at least one of them today in honor of O'Bannon. It's amazing how so few people know who he is, yet he's had such a massive impact on fans and the genre. RIP.

Hey Folks -

Oh, damn. _Alien_ was the first film to inspire me want to make movies. _Dark Star_ was an H.S. fav, quoted among my friends. Without him there would be no Giger's Alien, no Ellen Ripley, and no zombies saying "Brains!". Between _Return of the Living Dead_ and the under-rated _The Resurrected_, it's a damn shame he didn't get to sit in the director's chair more often. But his legacy is huge.

Thanks for it all, Dan. RIP.

Best,

David Schmidt
