New Saw: The Video Game Screens Bring the Pain

It's no secret that nine times out of ten video games based on movie licenses end up sucking, but man, that one percent of folks who get things right really knock it out of the park. Since the whole premise of the Saw franchise is based upon playing grisly games, it's a safe bet that Saw: The Video Game stands a better than average chance of landing safely within that elusive one percentile.

Combining action, puzzles, mystery and terror, the game will have an original plot that ties into but is, however, not entirely adapted from the films. The gameplay is focused on the unusual traps serial killer Jigsaw likes to rig for his tortured victims. You take control of a character in an asylum who has to decide whether and how to solve the puzzles and save Jigsaw's victims.

Konami's Saw: The Video Game is on track to be hitting home on October 6th, 2009 on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. Order your copies below.

Knock it out of the park? Really? From screenshots? First, let's wait and see how the gameplay is. The best screenshots in the world mean nothing if the gameplay sucks. Second, these screenshots look like they came from a PS2 or XBOX1. What, exactly, is the big deal here? The razor wires, for example, look like crap. No anti-aliasing and no curve rendering. They're supposed to be bendy wires, and we get jaggedy lines with hard angles. The character and environment textures are VERY poor. Half Life 2 blew them away...almost five years ago. In a modern game, with the processing power available in modern consoles, there is no excuse for being able to pick out the polygons used the render the game. This one looks like it could have been rendered on the Quake 3 engine.

It's not always about graphics, dude. what these screenshots do is capture the flavor of the series perfectly. They each have that distinct SAW look and if they can manage to compliment that with good gameplay and yes a good story then yeah, it has a shot of being a really good game.

I completely agree that it's not always about the graphics. However, especially given that we're talking about a game that relies heavily on atmosphere, the graphics often provide some insight into the level of effort being put into the game. If they were just a little behind, that would be fine with me. However, we're talking YEARS behind the curve. The person who said this looks like a budget title hit the nail on the head. This looks like something I'd have found on the Wal-Mart bargain rack two or three years ago. I am perfectly ready to be proven wrong. I hope it is as good as you expect. But these screenshots only "bring the pain" in the sense that the textures, jaggies, and pixelation hurt my eyes.
