Exclusive: Cain talks Silent Night, Zombie Night & Breath of Hate
Filmmaker Sean Cain, who’s currently mixing sound for his holiday ghoul opus Silent Night, Zombie Night, sat down with Dread Central yesterday to give us an update on that project, as well as his currently-casting Velvet Hammer Films/ArsonCuff Entertainment feature Breath of Hate, which “centers around a young woman in the escort business, who on her last job is confronted by a trio of escaped mental patients looking to change the world; one victim at a time” (according to the film’s PR).
Joining the Breath of Hate cast (which includes Ezra Buzzington of The Hills Have Eyes redux as Hate and Tim Muskatell of Silent Night, Zombie Night as Poot, a pot-smoking pimp) are Monique (Play Time) Parent, Elske (Jessicka Rabid) McCain, Ricardo (Easter Bunny Kill! Kill!) Gray and Trista Robinson. The latter two portray the maniacal-dinosaur loving Cleb and the underage Lolita-like Tabbi, respectively.
Cain has additionally tapped Nickolas (New Terminal Hote) Rossi to serve as his director of photography and Mario Salvucci as the film’s composer. Breath of Hate is slated to shoot late this summer.
As for scoring Silent Night, Zombie Night, Cain tells Dread, “It was originally reported that Jaye Luckett was the composer, but due to circumstances these duties have been taken over by Mario Salvucci. I first discovered him after listening to the soundtrack for the upcoming Jessicka Rabid. It was a beautiful haunting score that seemed like something you would hear on a major Hollywood film rather than this low budget grindhouse type horror film.”
As for wrapping up Silent Night, Zombie Night’s splatter sequences (the practical FX gags and makeup were provided by Tom Devlin of 1313FX), Cain brought onboard Jeff (Werewolf in a Woman’s Prison) “to enhance some of the blood gags,” which if you look at the film’s existing trailer below, are already pretty gratuitous. “He's done a great job and the picture was locked this week upon completion of these effects.”
With sound design and music scheduled to be completed by the end of the month, Cain looks to enter Silent Night, Zombie Night in Rachel Belofsky’s highly-regarded L.A. horror film festival Screamfest, which runs this October. The UK/European premiere will “be in conjunction with GoreZone Magazine's Weekend of Horror that takes place on October 31 thru November 1,” says Cain, although an exact date and place of screening is still to be determined.
