Look out Gotham! There’s a whole new threat heading your way, as a gang war is about to break out in your city. Gotham City Impostors is a brand new first-person shooter from Monolith Productions. The game itself is based on the Batman universe; although, there is no in-game appearance from the Dark Knight or any other Batman character in the game for that matter.

Gotham City Impostors is almost entirely dedicated to multiplayer, and that means there is very little storyline to the game. The game shows that there are two rivaling gangs–The Batz and The Jokerz–fighting for control of Gotham or some whimsical nonsense. Somewhere between the corny one liners, bleeped curse words and blurred middle fingers you get an idea of what this game is all about even though you might wish you hadn’t once you do see what the game offers as a story. You can find out this information by playing through the Initiation Mode, and aside from Challenge Mode, the rest of the game is made up of online multiplayer modes.

Although the game is based off of the Batman universe, it definitely takes a few notes from big name FPS franchises. The control scheme is laid out very similar to what you’d find in Call of Duty games. Gotham City Impostors also features a progressive leveling system that allows you to unlock new weapons, equipment, custom classes, etc. Loadouts can be customized with two primary weapons such as a machine gun and rocket launcher, a support item such as a pipe bomb, a gadget that allows you to travel across the map faster such as a grapple gun and a special move known as a Rampage. Your “Secret Identity” can also be further customized so that your character has the exact costume, calling card and other information that you want.

Gotham City Impostors features three multiplayer modes: Team Deathmatch, Fumigation and Psych Warfare. Team Deathmatch is your classic multiplayer mode where the Jokerz and Batz face off in a fight to the death. Fumigation plays similar to territory capturing games with a deadly twist for the team that is unfortunate not to capture the Gasblasters. Pysch Warfare asks the opposing teams to gain control of a battery and take it to the enemies’ base to power up a machine that blasts mood altering propaganda that affects their team’s morale.

With a deep leveling system and fun game modes, it would be easy to lose lots of hours playing Gotham City Impostors. The lack of any real storyline and very few offline or cooperative modes really keep the game from being as good as it could’ve been. The addition of tons of launch day DLC also hurts, because it makes you wonder why they couldn’t have just added it into the full download. Still, the game can be pretty funny at times, and it is quite addictive. If you’re looking for a unique, new shooter, look no further than Gotham City Impostors.

Gotham City Impostors was released on February 7, 2012. For more information, check out the official Gotham City Impostors website.
