The South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival kicks off tomorrow, which means we’ll soon be sharing lots of news and reviews from the event; but first we have a look at Emma Rozanski’s debut feature, Papagajka (The Parrot), a surreal and stylish psychological thriller that is having its World Premiere in the SXGlobal section on Sunday, March 13th.

Written and directed by Rozanski, the film stars Adnan Omerovic, Susanna Cappellaro, Tina Keserovic, Sabina Mrgan, and Don Guido.

The clip is courtesy of Indiewire, who also spoke with Rozanski. “The main theme I explore in Papagajka is apathy,” she told the site. “In a way it’s a cautionary tale about indifference; yet, the layers of story allow for individual interpretation and imagination. I’m interested in exploring how people (and cultures) transform under psychological conflict, and how the mind adapts to survive in different environments. Being at the crossroads of time and culture in so many ways, Bosnia was the perfect place to do this.”

She continued, “The two main characters are representative of different states of mind and transition. One is an ‘outsider’ who is completely unfamiliar with the surroundings she finds herself in, and the other is so entrenched in his bunker of a world that it has become monotonous and inflexible. These conflicting points of view create the dramatic situation that enables us to view psychological transitions on varying levels, as these two differing minds cope with their adaptation, needs, and desires.”

Following its SXSW premiere at the Alamo Ritz 2 on the 13th at 1PM, Papagajka also screens on Monday, March 14th, at 9:45PM (Alamo Lamar B) and on Thursday, March 17th, at 10:30PM (Alamo Ritz 2).
