If you leave a door half open, soon you’ll hear the whispers spoken.

Netflix has just released the official trailer for its upcoming serial killer film, The Whisper Man, which streams this August.

The trailer is pretty solid, all things considered, and has the look and feel of an old-school ’90s thriller in the vein of Se7en or The Silence of the Lambs. It feels incredibly grounded, with just the slightest tease that there could be something supernatural lurking beneath the surface. More importantly, it doesn’t give away the killer or spoil much of the mystery. Instead, it saves its creepiest moment for the end, when all you hear is the Whisper Man speaking on a cassette tape. It’s an effective tease that left me wanting more. I’ll definitely be watching this one on day one. Would I have gone to the theater for it? Probably not. Even so, it looks like a genuinely entertaining thriller.

Based on Alex North’s New York Times bestselling novel, The Whisper Man follows a widowed crime writer who, when his eight-year-old son is abducted, looks to his estranged father, a retired former police detective, for help, only to discover a connection with the decades-old case of a convicted serial killer known as “The Whisper Man”.

The film features a heavyweight cast of Robert De Niro, Michelle Monaghan, Adam Scott, Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Acston Luca Porto, and Will Brill.

James Ashcroft (The Rule of Jenny Pen) directed from a script by Ben Jacoby and Chase Palmer.

Producers include Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Angela Russo-Otstot, Michael Disco, and Kassee Whiting. Marcus Viscidi, Tim Connors, and Alex Leb serve as executive producers.

Hear the whispers when The Whisper Man creeps onto Netflix August 28th.

The deadliest killers can’t be silenced…
