Fresh ‘Hope’ Trailer Crash Lands With Insane 80s-Style Action

The latest trailer for Neon’s Hope continues to deliver everything audiences have been talking about since its Cannes premiere. Early reactions have been sharply divided, with some dismissing the visual effects while others are already calling it an instant cult classic. If nothing else, it’s a movie that swings for the fences.
The trailer is a full-blown blitz of action-packed chaos, with humans on horseback firing rifles, spaceships crashing out of the sky, grotesque alien creatures tearing through the woods, and one insane set piece after another.
More than anything, Hope feels like a throwback to the kind of movies Hollywood used to make in the ’80s, where entertainment came first. Big ideas, bigger spectacle, and absolutely no fear of being weird. Whether every visual effect lands or not almost feels beside the point. The goal is to overwhelm you, throw everything at the screen, and make sure you’re having the time of your life. Judging by this trailer, that’s exactly what Na Hong-jin is delivering.
In theaters September 9.
The film’s title comes from the location: “In the remote village of Hope Harbor, a mysterious creature has wreaked havoc on the village. Police and local hunters set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But not all is as it seems. As panic spreads and reality begins to unravel, the village finds itself facing something far beyond imagination.”
Starring are Hwang Jung-min (The Wailing), Zo In-sung (Moving), Hoyeon (“Squid Game”), Michael Fassbender (The Killer), Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina), Taylor Russell (Bones and All), and Cameron Britton (“Mindhunter”).
Hope marks the first feature from Hong-jin since his excellent folk horror film, The Wailing.
