Child Disappearance Sparks Manhunt In First Teaser For Cannes Thriller ‘Karma’
Deadline shares the teaser trailer for the psychological thriller Karma, which premieres as a Special Screening at the ongoing Cannes festival.
Marion Cotillard stars as a woman with a troubled past whose new life is upended by a child’s disappearance in the drama written and directed by Guillaume Canet.
“In a village of northern Spain, Jeanne tries to rebuild her life with Daniel, who knows nothing about her troubled past. One day, Mateo, Jeanne’s six-year-old godson, mysteriously disappears… In order to escape the police, who instantly suspect her, Jeanne flees to France and hides out in the community where she grew up, led by Marc. Refusing to believe that the woman he loves is guilty, Daniel will do everything in his power to find her before the police do.”
It marks their sixth collaboration after Little White Lies, Blood Ties, Rock’n Roll, Little White Lies 2 and Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom.
In an interview with Deadline ahead of the premiere, Cotillard revealed that Canet wrote the protagonist role specifically for her as she returned to work following a period focused on raising her children.
“He said, ‘I really want to write a movie for you with a very, very strong character, with something different from what you did before’,” she recounted.
“He came up with this character whose past comes back and turns her life into something that is totally different from what she’s been living for years. He wrote a very, very strong and twisted script for me. She’s a woman who slowly reveals herself, who thinks she’s weak but discovers she’s not.”
The thriller is lead produced by Paris-based Iconoclast in co-production with Canet’s Caneo France.
Pathé Films is handling French distribution and international sales.
