Horror is an ever-versatile genre. One that is often juxtaposed alongside other seemingly incompatible cinematic classifications. Horror and comedy seem like they should be at war with one another on paper, but the two often go brilliantly together with the right screenplay and director. Perhaps even more seemingly at odds is the pairing of the horror and romance genres. We don’t see these two come together as often as horror and comedy, but when they do, I can’t help but find myself curious. The seemingly opposed categories previously aligned in Jim Jarmusch’s Only Lovers Left Alive, and the film’s genre-melding antics won the picture a fair amount of critical acclaim, including props from cinematic icon Guillermo del Toro.

Critics took care to praise the film for its moody atmosphere and striking visuals. Though the flick is known to be somewhat light on scares, many who have experienced it very much connect with the standout performances from Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as lead characters Adam and Eve, a pair of centuries-old vampires navigating, well, life and love in the 21st century.

The film wasn’t a box-office smash when it bowed to stateside audiences in 2014, and it still remains fairly underseen outside of cult cinema enthusiasts. The picture has nonetheless attracted a few high-profile fans. Fans like the great Guillermo del Toro. The Crimson Peak director is a big champion of the picture. He shared as much via an X (formerly Twitter) post a few years back.

What does Guillermo del Toro have to say about Only Lovers Left Alive?

Del Toro always has such a way with words. He speaks about cinema in a magical and captivating way that makes me want to check out anything he recommends. I’m embarrassed to admit that I haven’t yet seen this one, but his fondness for the picture makes me want to rectify that soon.
